Chaperone Policy (based on GMC and Medical Defence Union guidelines)

Preamble

Occupational health medicals generally require a candidate to partially undress to allow an appropriate examination. Candidates are therefore encouraged to be prepared to change into sports gear (e.g. shorts for men, shorts and sports bra for women) for their examination.

Examination of breasts, genitalia or rectum will NEVER be required for the occupational health medicals undertaken at Cornwall Medicals. Any examination that requires partial undressing will be undertaken with clear explanation and a chaperone will be offered as standard practice. Privacy and dignity will be paramount at all times. Candidates are welcome to bring a family member or friend with them if they prefer but it is important to understand that despite sometimes being referred to as an ‘informal chaperone’, a friend or family member is not the same thing as, and may not be a substitute for a formal chaperone.

As all examinations are undertaken in person at our clinic, this protocol does not encompass video-consultations or home visits.

If a candidate thinks that they will require a chaperone they are encouraged to notify us at the time their appointment is booked so that we can ensure that an appropriate chaperone can be present at the time of their medical.
